Getting Mushy

IMG_0713

I can’t wait to tell you all about my travels to Provence this weekend and the delicious things I made last week, along with gutting a pigeon today.  But first, I want to take a time-out to talk about other less glamorous things.  You know that old cliche, “You are what you eat”?  Well, what happens if you eat duck confit followed by a dessert plate and then three scoops of ice cream?  What happens if you eat like this regularly for over three weeks?  Yep – you get mushy.  I want to tell you about this for three reasons: 1) someone else has maybe had a similar experience? 2) if I post my workout goals on the internet, there’s no going back; 3) if I fail at said goals, you will all expect to see a slightly misshapen version of me when I get back and can prepare yourselves to react politely.

As you probably know, I’m not the sort of person to just stop working out while I’m on vacation, and I’m definitely not the sort of person that can go six weeks without working out without turning in to Oscar the Grouch.  I’ve been running while I’m here – maybe less regularly than I’d like (something like 4 days a week instead of 5 or 6), but definitely not less than I was before coming.  But for a gal that limits her bread intake fairly strictly – I’ve been known to order hamburgers without buns – and doesn’t cook with pounds of butter and cream, the amount of running I’ve been doing cannot combat the food I’ve been eating.  Also – I’m used to doing CrossFit, cycling, swimming, and lots of other things alongside running, which I have mostly not been doing.

You can only live in France for six weeks once (or maybe more times?), and I don’t plan on slowing down on the eating.  Even if I’m a little homesick for the spicy, salty, vegetable-ridden food of America, I am going to continue enjoying the amazingly creamy food here and the bakeries on every corner.  So what can I do?  I guess I’ll just have to work out more!  Before coming, I discovered this app called “Box Jump” (through a coworker).  Yes, it was originally an app for CrossFit and it definitely has a CrossFit feel to it, but don’t discount it yet.  You can input the equipment that you have – anything from full gym to nothing but open space – and the amount of time that you have and it will give you a workout.  Don’t like the workout?  Just hit the “Random WOD” button again and you’ll get a new one.  I’ve used it a few times and really like it, and one of my travel buddies, Tory, has been working out with me.  Did I mention these workouts happen on the beach?  My goal is to do one of these workouts every day for the rest of my time here (13 days).  If you’ve ever found yourself in a similar situation, I would definitely recommend checking it out!  I read a lot of blogs where people get paid to review this kind of product, so maybe I need to say that no one is paying me?  Obviously – I’m not exactly a big deal in the world of bloggers.

I can’t wait to cook and bake for each and every one of you when I get back, but maybe give me a few days to detox?  Thanks for bearing with me through that little side post.  Later today – back to our usual programming.
